Why Everything Feels Like An Emergency

Have you noticed that everything seems urgent these days?

Not important.

Urgent.

Every email.

Every notification.

Every headline.

Every social media post.

Everything is apparently breaking, shocking, devastating, life-changing, game-changing, or something-ending.

The world feels like it’s constantly screaming.

And after a while, that starts to have an effect.

Because humans were never designed to live in a permanent state of alert.

And that’s exactly what many of us are doing.

BREAKING NEWS: The Sky Is Falling

Turn on the news.

Open social media.

Check your phone.

Within minutes you’ll be informed that:

  • civilisation is collapsing
  • the economy is doomed
  • your hormones are broken
  • your metabolism is dying
  • your food is poisoning you
  • your children are doomed
  • your dog probably has anxiety

Everything is presented as if it requires your immediate attention.

Immediately.

Right now.

Drop everything.

Panic.

The problem is your brain doesn’t know the difference between a genuine threat and a notification designed to get clicks.

It just sees danger.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Your Nervous System Wasn’t Built For This

For most of human history, danger was fairly obvious.

There was a predator.

A rival tribe.

A storm.

A famine.

Something tangible.

You dealt with it.

Then the danger passed.

Your nervous system got a chance to settle down.

Modern life is different.

Now we’re exposed to:

  • hundreds of headlines
  • constant notifications
  • social media outrage
  • work emails
  • financial worries
  • global events

Every single fucking day, and it’s tiring.

The danger never arrives.

But the warning signals never stop either.

It’s like having a smoke alarm that goes off every twenty minutes.

Eventually it starts affecting everything.

Fitness Is Starting To Look The Same

The fitness industry has become brilliant at manufacturing emergencies.

Every week there’s a new crisis.

Apparently:

  • your cortisol is too high
  • your metabolism is broken
  • your hormones are ruined
  • your gut is damaged
  • your inflammation is dangerous
  • your body is storing toxins

And conveniently, somebody happens to have a solution.

Usually for £49.99 on a subscription type thing, where you forget about cancelling and next ting you know, once again, you’re skint.

Funny how that works.

The reality?

Most people don’t have a hidden health catastrophe.

Most people are:

  • tired
  • stressed
  • under-slept
  • under-moved
  • overwhelmed

That’s is a very different kettle of fish.

Everything Is Optimised For Attention

Calm doesn’t sell.

Fear sells.

Outrage sells.

Panic sells.

If I post:

“Go for a walk and get eight hours sleep.”

Nobody gives a fuck.

If I post:

“Three hidden signs your hormones are destroying your life.”

Loads of views.

The algorithms know this.

The media knows this.

The wellness industry definitely knows this.

So, the volume gets turned up.

Again.

And again.

And again.

We Treat Every Day Like A Race

One of the things I’ve learned from racing is that you can’t stay at maximum effort forever.

You’d break.

A race works because it’s temporary.

You push hard.

You recover.

You adapt.

Life is supposed to work in a similar way.

The problem is many people are treating every single day like race day.

Every email is urgent.

Every task is urgent.

Every deadline is urgent.

Every problem is urgent.

Eventually your body starts responding exactly how you’d expect.

You feel knackered.

Maybe Not Everything Needs Your Attention

This has become one of my favourite questions.

Does this actually need my attention right now?

Most of the time?

The answer is no.

That headline?

No.

That notification?

No.

That social media argument between two strangers?

Definitely no.

The world has become very good at convincing us that everything matters.

The reality is that most things don’t.

At least not immediately.

Nature Has The Opposite Message

This is one of the reasons I keep finding myself drawn outside.

The sea isn’t in a hurry.

Trees aren’t in a hurry.

The seasons aren’t in a hurry.

Nature operates on a completely different timetable.

And when you spend time around it, you start remembering that not everything needs to happen right now.

The world keeps turning.

The tide keeps coming in.

The trees keep growing.

Whether you answer that email immediately or not.

You will never complete work, it’s not a computer game where you finish the final level by beating the big boss.

The Fox Den Version

At The Den, we try to keep things simple.

You don’t need:

  • a perfect diet
  • a perfect training plan
  • a perfect recovery routine

You need consistency.

You need patience.

You need to keep showing up.

That’s it.

Because health isn’t an emergency.

It’s a long-term relationship.

And the people who do best are rarely the ones who panic.

They’re the ones who stay steady.

Final Thought

The modern world profits from your attention.

The fitness industry profits from your worry.

Social media profits from your outrage.

So, it’s worth remembering:

Not everything is an emergency.

Not every problem needs solving today.

Not every headline deserves your energy.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is:

Put the phone down.

Go for a walk.

Lift some weights.

Have a conversation.

Watch a sunset.

And remember that most things can wait until tomorrow.

Keep Smiling.
