I need to get fit first

No, You Don’t Need to ‘Get Fit First’ to Join a Gym

Smashing the biggest fitness myth with a Dumbbell of truth.

Let’s get this out the way right now: you do not need to be fit to join a gym.
Just like you don’t need to be clean to take a shower, fluent to start learning Italian, or flexible to do yoga.

But if we had a fiver for every time someone said, “I’ll start coming once I’ve got a bit fitter,” we’d be writing this from a villa in Sardinia.

So let’s break down this very common — and completely bonkers — idea that you need to get fit before you go somewhere designed to help you get fit.

Where did this idea come from?

Somewhere between toxic gym culture, glossy fitness ads, and that weird PE teacher you had at school, a myth was born: that gyms are for people who already know what they’re doing. That you should already look like a “before & after” photo just to qualify for a membership.

It’s nonsense, but unfortunately, it’s powerful nonsense.

We’ve had people tell us they were scared they’d be the most unfit person in the room. Or that they’d “slow others down” in a group class. Or that people would look at them as funny. (They won’t. They’re too busy trying not to fall over doing Bulgarian split squats.)

Real Talk: What gyms should be like

Let us give it to you straight: the right gym — and the right coach — doesn’t care where you’re starting from. We care that you showed up.

You could be walking in with zero experience, 20 years out of the game, or dragging a dodgy knee and a bag full of nerves — you’re still welcome.

At The Fox Den, our job is to meet you where you are, not expect you to be where we are.

Can’t do a push-up? Cool, we’ll show you how.
Don’t know your deadlift from your bench press? We’ve got you.
Haven’t exercised since that weird Teacher made you climb the rope in 1989? Welcome back.

What actually happens when you start?

Here’s what won’t happen:

  • Nobody will laugh at you.
  • You won’t be left behind.
  • You won’t be expected to lift a car or run a 5K on day one.

Here’s what will happen:

  • You’ll be coached at your own pace.
  • You’ll learn the basics safely and confidently.
  • You’ll meet people who are also starting, returning, or finding their groove.

Most importantly, you’ll realise you’re stronger than you think.

Fitness is a skill, and skills are learned

You don’t become fit and strong by accident. You learn it like learning to drive. Or cook. Or bubbling in a bar in St Lucia without injuring yourself.

And just like those things, it’s easier (and safer) when someone shows you how. That’s what we’re here for.

Trying to “get fit first” before joining a gym is like trying to learn guitar without ever picking one up. You’re going to get a lot further, a lot faster, when you just start — wobbly squats, wonky planks and all.

Worried about keeping up? That’s our job.

Our small group training sessions are built for real life. Every exercise can be scaled, modified, or adjusted. Whether you’re a beginner, returning after injury, or just getting back into things after a long break — we tailor it to you.

There’s no pressure to perform. No army-shouting coach. No mirrors showing you your grunting, sweaty face in HD.

Just guidance, encouragement, proper programming, and some cracking tunes (Ok, this one is not guaranteed).

But what if I really feel self-conscious?

That’s totally normal — and temporary. Most people feel a bit awkward when they first join. But that disappears faster than a pack of Maryland cookies when left in my company, once you realise nobody’s judging you.

Everyone’s too focused on their own reps, their own form, their own effort. You’re not being watched. You’re being welcomed.

Let’s flip the mindset: Join the gym to get fit

You don’t need to prove anything before walking through the doors. You don’t need to be fitter, thinner, stronger, or more confident.

You just need to start.

And you’ll be amazed how quickly your confidence builds once you’re in a supportive space, surrounded by people who get it, and guided by coaches who know exactly how to help you succeed, at your pace.

So, what now?

If you’ve been putting off joining because you’re “not ready yet,” this is your nudge (well, more like a gentle shove) to get started.

Whether it is here or somewhere else, we’ll meet you where you are, they should too. No judgement. No pressure. No burpees in the car park.

Just real fitness for real humans
